Abstract

Cities can support biodiversity conservation as they often provide valuable secondary habitats for animals, and in particular invertebrates. In this context, Berlin – as a green capital – has a great potential and thus biodiversity surveys are mandatory to increase data availability. Urban dry grasslands are known to be especially diverse, but to date only incompletely investigated. Here we present the first comprehensive species list for dry grassland spiders in Berlin and adjacent federal state of Brandenburg. A total of 52 sites were sampled in 2017 and pitfall trapping yielded 194 species from 18581 individuals. We found 33 species that are endangered in Berlin and nine of them were considered to be extinct. Our record also included 18 threatened species for Brandenburg. Talavera aperta was recorded in Berlin for the first time and Metapanamomops kaestneri as well as Sibianor tantulus are very rare across Germany. Our findings highlight the enormous potential of cities for regional and nationwide biodiversity conservation.
