The logo of the Arachnological Society
Argyroneta aquatica was elected the first Spider of the Year in 2000 - due to its extraordinary life history - this is the only species, among > 48.000 spider species worldwide, spending its entire life underwater. And this is also why Argyroneta is the heraldic animal of the Arachnological Society.
The AraGes logo was designed by P. Jäger und K. Rehbinder. It shows the palaearctic water spider near its diving bell, an air bubble held by a silken web. A short video sequence shows how the diving bell is constructed by the spider.
More on the locomotion underwater and how they grab air bubbles from the surface to fill their diving bell is shown in a 7-minute video on the YouTube channel of the Natural History Museum Karlsruhe.
